Coffee and Ajwa Dates

 Ajwa dates on modern revival of Aode-Kutani dish, Greek coffee in Cypriot hand-made briki, with Royal Crown Darby demitasse cup and saucer with “King‘s pattern” circa 1805. 豆皿として現代に蘇った復興久谷の上にはアジワデーツ。現地ではブリキと呼ばれるキプロス手製の小型コーヒー用ポットと1805年イギリスロイヤルクラウンダービー製のキングズパターンと呼ばれる手書きの模様の入った磁器製デミタスセット。

The Ajwa dates are from Madina, Saudi Arabia. Its surface is glossy black. It is a fairly small-sized date unlike ever-so-popular  majhūl (medjool) dates. It has a taffy like consistency with a molasses like flavor. The　taffy-like chewy consistency and the just-the-right sweetness go really well with the Greek coffee with no sugar. 　アジワデーツはサウジアラビアのマディーナより輸入された。アメリカではよく見かけるマジドゥールデーツよりは小さく、肌は黒光りする。タフィーの様に歯応えがあり弾力性が強いが、甘さは控えめで砂糖なしのギリシャコーヒーと相性があう。

The Aode-Kutani dish seen here is a modern production of the late Edo period Aode-Kutani, which is itself also a revival of the early Edo period Kutani ware known as Ko-Kutani (old Kutani.)  This modern version can be found for purchase upon searching Kutani Mame Sara (small dish.) 　この青手九谷豆皿は復興九谷の複製。江戸時代後半に現れた復興九谷自体が古九谷の再来である。

The Royal Crown Darby demitasse cups and saucer’s “King’s pattern” derives from old Imari (Arita.) Although the original Japanese design had a mixture of asymmetrical naturalistic motifs placed in symmetrical designs, the English counterpart used the symmetrical design as the mode of the pattern throughout. The slight inconsistency of the hand painting to me accentuates the beauty. このキングズパターンと呼ばれるロイヤルクラウンダービーのデミタスセットの模様は元々日本磁器の模様から取られた。日本の磁器に飾られた模様自体は自然描写的主体が対称的模様の中に盛り込まれたデザインになっていたが、このイギリスの制作会社では対称的模様を重視したようだ。手で描かれた不揃いの絵付けが絶妙に美しい。

Although the set is more than 200 years old, it looks as though it was made in the last decade. When I am drinking coffee out of it, I feel a slice of history as well as the steadiness of well produced porcelain. 制作から二百年以上経つものの、過去十年以内に作られたのではと思えるほど状態が良い。これを使いコーヒーを飲む時歴史を感じ、またよく作られたという安定感も感じる。
